Does a rental machine from the supermarket work for carpet cleaning?
I tend to get this asked quite a bit. The short answer is yes it will, sometimes. I do get a large about of DIY fix up jobs, thankfully the damage is usually reversible. We always know when the little carpet machines have been used (excess foam and chemical) or sometimes it was so called pro’s with under powered machines. But in the end the customer’s had to pay to clean it themselves and then a pro to fix it up. Those little carpet cleaning machines are around 2 horespower. The steam carpet cleaning system that EnviroCare Carpet Cleaning use is 80 Hp, quite easy to notice a bit of a difference there. Now I see 4 things that you need to be mindful of when considering hiring a machine.
Firstly is the true cost of doing it yourself- machine hire, carpet shampoo, relevant carpet cleaners, the fuel used picking it up and of course the cost of your labour between picking it up and dropping it off. Then be aware that you may still need to get a pro carpet cleaner in to “clean it properly” if things don’t look as good as you hoped.
Now the carpet cleaning spotters available for home use are not nearly as powerful as what a well equiped professional carpet cleaner has. Sure some formulation’s can remove a lot of nasty stains, but really stubborn stains need to be treated with the right reactions in the right order for optimal results. For more info on stains check out my other blogs.
Next issue is over cleaning an area trying to get a good result. Using too much water will cause the carpets hydrophobic backing to eventually absorb water. This can potentially cause more problems such as wicking, browning, yellowing and even split seams on some carpets!
The final thing to be sure of is what chemicals are you putting on your carpet. Only a small percent of industrially available chemicals are well studied and many are potentially toxic in the long term. Many of the ingredients in consumables available at the supermarket have suspected toxic effects. Be sure you are happy with what you are putting on there. Especially if you have children. EnviroCare Carpet Cleaning only use save products that are “green”- safe for you and the environment.
So true cost, stain removal/setting, problems from overwetting and chemical residues are all worth considering when you are contemplating DIY carpet cleaning. Sometimes carpet cleaning is better left to the professionals.
Stains
The internet has every answer in the book, yes maybe it does after all it is the ultimate “book”. However it also is not specific to your situation. For instance every carpet is a different colour, material, age and grade. These factors and especially what stain you have, all have a huge impact on what methods should be applied for carpet cleaning.
Every one has heard of stains becoming “chemically set” and one cause of this is when the stain has been treated incorrectly.
In reality the advise that give our customers is if you want to be sure that we have the best chance at complete stain removal, then only use water. This is usually all you need to do if you get onto it straight away. Scrape excess spill away, absorb repeatedly with towels lightly misting water. Only use a tiny amount of detergent if needed. Small amounts of a quality carpet spotter is fine but dont over apply them and dont combine them. Most supermarket spotters will bleach your carpet if you use too much! In saying that we can still fully remove most stains even if they have been unsuccessfully treated. Sometimes things such as carpet cleaning really should be left to professional carpet cleaners.
Lastly when you decide you want the best expertise in the country, give EnviroCare Carpet Cleaning a call. And remember if you can tell me excactly what you have tried on the carpet, I will have the best chances of complete removal.

What does a good Carpet Cleaning Service cost?
If you have called around or searched the web you will have noticed that there is a big difference in prices. Usually there is a rough correlation between price and quality as with most things. But there are always exceptions with the rule. We have a clear advantage over our competition in the fact that all of the stain treatments are carried out by myself armed with all my chemistry education and 11 years field experience. I will earn my degree very shortly making me the only qualified chemist carpet cleaning and stain removal specialist in New Zealand.
It may come as a little suprise that we actually charge less than some of our competitors given that we are leaders in our industry. We want to be known as the Dunedin carpet cleaning service that does the best job everytime and offers the best value for your dollar.
With the extra technical knowledge of carpet cleaning and stain chemistry, we are able to clean and treat stains more effeciently than others. We pass this on to our customers with lower charges for our services. Whether it is carpet cleaning, stain removal or flood restoration, we promise to have the best price. If you are able to find a cheaper quote just give us a call and we will try to match it.
Some commonly asked questions.
How long does it take to dry?
It does depend a lot of carpet type, how dirty it was, temperature, humidity and airflow. Most of the time restorative carpet cleaning takes between 1 and 4 hours.
Doesn’t carpet get dirty quicker once it has been cleaned?
Absolutly not! Carpet cleaners who leave dirt attracting residues have created a misconception there. When carpets are cleaned by a true knowledgable operator there will be no bad residues that dirt can stick to creating rapid resoiling.
Do you use our hot water?
No we dont. The heart of our carpet cleaning system is fueled by LPG. It is a whooping 180000 btu- enough to heat 2 or 3 high pressure carpet cleaners. Water can be a significant expense whether its from your cylinder or heated in their carpet cleaning machine with your power. Vaccum is cheap and effeicent to run by electricity but water should always be heated from the truck. When access is a problem we have a fully portable carpet cleaner option aswell.
If you are the best at what you do, why dont you charge as much as the other carpet cleaners?
We are able to charge less because we are so good at getting carpets cleaned and removing stains, we can complete each job more effeciently, saving us time and our clients money. Also being 100% locally and family owned means that we dont pay expensive franchise fees that go up to Auckland or overseas.
